MATHY Technical Tip #25: Optimal Care for the AdBlue® System

MATHY Technical Tip #25: Optimal Care for the AdBlue® System

The AdBlue® aftertreatment system does a great job – but…

Since the introduction of AdBlue® aftertreatment systems in modern diesel engines, the environmental compatibility of diesel vehicles has improved considerably. By injecting a urea solution into the exhaust gas stream, harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) are converted into nitrogen (N₂) and water (H₂O) through a chemical reaction in the SCR catalytic converter. The result is compliance with strict environmental regulations and emission standards.

Without a doubt, the AdBlue® aftertreatment system is highly effective — but it requires proper care, otherwise repairs can become expensive.

The advantages of an AdBlue® system

Reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx)
AdBlue® helps convert harmful nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gases into nitrogen and water, significantly reducing environmental impact.
Compliance with emission standards
By lowering NOx emissions, these systems help vehicles meet strict environmental regulations and emission standards.
Improved air quality
Reducing nitrogen oxides contributes to better air quality, which is especially important in urban areas.

What problems can occur in AdBlue® systems?

Various issues can arise in AdBlue® aftertreatment systems used in modern diesel vehicles:

Clogging and crystallization: AdBlue® can crystallize, causing blockages within the system. These crystals can form in nozzles, lines, and pumps.
Pump and injector failure: The AdBlue® pump and injectors are crucial for accurate dosing and atomization of the urea solution. Failures can reduce system efficiency and lead to high repair costs.
Sensor and software issues: Sensors monitoring the AdBlue® system may malfunction. Software problems can also impair proper system operation. Tank-related problems: Cracks or leaks in the AdBlue® tank can result in AdBlue® loss.
Temperature effects: At very low temperatures, AdBlue® can freeze, which may cause system malfunctions.

The solution: “MATHY-ABR Anti-Crystallization System Cleaner”

MATHY-ABR is a highly concentrated additive specifically developed for all diesel engines and diesel fuels equipped with AdBlue® systems. It is compatible with all diesel oxidation catalysts and diesel particulate filters (DPF).

The main functions of MATHY-ABR are cleaning the AdBlue® system and optimizing its operational reliability.

It prevents crystal formation and dissolves existing crystals that could damage or clog the AdBlue® system. By dissolving oxidation residues and ensuring residue-free spraying, MATHY-ABR helps reduce repair effort, optimizes the spray pattern of the SCR injector, and maintains the flow rate of the SCR pump.

In addition, it stabilizes the shelf life and storage stability of AdBlue® urea and reduces foaming.

Technical problems are reduced

Technical issues caused by contamination and crystallization in the AdBlue® system — such as changes in the SCR injector spray pattern, failure of the SCR pump, reduced system performance, blockages in pipes and lines, and increased repair costs — are reduced or eliminated through the use of MATHY-ABR.

Application and dosage of MATHY-ABR

For use, it is recommended to add 25 ml of MATHY-ABR per 10 liters of AdBlue® (mixing ratio 1:400) before each AdBlue® refill. One 250 ml can of MATHY-ABR is sufficient for 100 liters of AdBlue®. The additive should be poured into the AdBlue® tank before refilling to ensure optimal mixing.

Recommendation: Use preventively with every AdBlue® refill!

The MATHY team wishes you great success using MATHY-ABR.
